Agriculture in Karnataka contributes 25% to the state GDP with over 60% of the population engaged in it and 12.31 million hectares of land under cultivation. Due to lack of proper irrigation, the success of agricultural output in the state is largely dependent on the southwest monsoon.

Karnataka produces a variety of crops. The main crops grown in the state include rice, ragi, jowar, groundnut, maize and pulses. A number of oilseeds and cash crops are also grown in the state. Coffee is one of the main plantation crops grown in the state. Other important crops include cashew, coconut, areca nut, cardamom, chillies, cotton, sugarcane and tobacco.

The State Government of Karnataka has established the Karnataka Agriculture mission that aims at improving the economic conditions of farmers in the state. Under this mission, numerous agencies were set up to aid farmers by working out strategies, schemes, and programs and implementing them in a time-bound manner.
